How Many Different Forms Of Prayer Are There?

For the purposes of this hub I'm defining prayer as " a combination of positive thought and action directed to improving the wellbeing of yourself or another" or something similar. The definition may change as I write this and I will post any and all variations as I get to them.

The broad definition includes any kind of religious prayer providing it has a physical component to it which expresses the thought. In the case of christian prayer this would include placing hands in prayer position or clasping hands at the level of the heart. It could also include the combination of thought and action involved whe we place money in a charity box. The action of donating money or time in itself I would consider a prayerful activity.

Using this broad definition in a new age or spiritualist context then something such as hands on spiritual healing  could be considered a form of prayer. In an artistic context then a dedication at the end of the credits on a movie could beconsidered a form of prayer.

Using my definition the movie dedication example contains both a positive thought and an action (in this case by the producer/director / editor of the movie). Actors often dedicate their performance in a theatrical production to a mentor or inspirational actor.

The same can be said of the performers on TV talent shows such as Britains Got Talent where their performance and the process which got the act to the final or semi final stage is often dedicated to a deceased relative or friend.

Hi Dennis,

I first found your question in Q&A and followed the thread a bit, then when you decided to immediately write a hub I decided to read your hub.

I have a question for you: why do you ask?

What I mean is: are you trying to understand prayer or investigating what prayer is or trying to pray better or what?

If you could answer this question then one might answer with more meaning.

Thank you

I'm doing all three, trying to understand the meaning of prayer, defining it, and investigating how to pray more effectively and measure the results in an objective way

Prayer, as I understand it, is a ritualized way of expressing one's intent, affirming one's dedication to it, and asking the higher forces to make it manifest.

Prayer to me is uniting with God, removing boundaries between my physical thinking and moving into a spiritual realm. I used to think prayer was asking for certain things to work in certain ways but I just didn't know before.

I enjoyed your HUB! I think there are a host of spiritual tools all of us can tap into, including but not limited to prayer, meditation, visualization, decrees, healing energy, and Love-Light connections. Hope you will check out some of my work too. Peace....Gary.

    Why A Hub About Prayer?

I asked the question in the religion forum, partly as a way to clarify and share my own thoughts and also to gather opinions and experience from people who may follow different traditions, both formal religion and informal paths such as the more new age varieties of spirituality.

I'm interested both in the form, process and results of prayer. I'm also interested in ways to measure the results as this appears to be a  tricky issue given that prayer is often the last resort for many after other potential treatments have been tried and found to not produce the desired results.

This hub is as much a place to document my thoughts and research on the topic as anything else and my thoughts can change with every additional opinion or experience I hear.
